Havoc in Heaven: Sun Wukong and Political Activism

New Adventures of Havoc in Heaven I

As China was preparing to show off Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, thousands of people who helped build the city were bussed out of town and many others were arrested for their protestsThe government had deemed these people as not being good enough to be seen by the world. They were not invited to participate in the festivities. Chinese-American Jennifer Wen Ma, who was part of the creative team for the Beijing Olympics compared the incident to the Great Immortal Peach Festival from the great Chinese epic, Journey to the West.

New Adventures of Havoc in Heaven III

For those unfamiliar with the story of Journey the the West (arguably China's greatest epic), the most beloved character is a mischievous and naughty monkey. He is a symbol of anarchy and a mascot of rebellion towards all authoritarian figures – including the Jade Emperor and Buddah! Monkey is such a recognizable symbol of China, he was ironically used by the BBC as a mascot for the 2008 Olympic coverage.

BBC Sport's Olympics Monkey

In one of the most memorable tales of monkey's adventures, all the immortals of heaven were invited to a great peach festival to commemorate their immortality. Every 3000 years the immortals ate the fruit from the immortal peach trees. Monkey, however, was not invited to the feast. Furious for not receiving an invitation, monkey takes revenge by ambushing the feast and eating all of the peaches, thereby destroying the party. The flesh of the peach fruit granted the monkey immortality and he declared himself "equal to heaven" and launches a campaign of revenge – an all-out war against the immortals of heaven. He is so powerful, no one can hope to stop him as he creates "havoc in heaven".

Monkey Stealing the Immortal Peaches

The New Adventures of Havoc in Heaven I, originally titled The Monkey King, is the beginning of a series of smoke-screen animations projected over historical landmarks. During the Olympics Jennifer Wen Ma hoped that there could be a hero who would stand up to the injustices and abuses of the Chinese government. There was most likely an intention of inciting an uprising with the piece and many cops were placed on standby while the monkey was projected into the sky.

Elsa Schiaparelli

Elsa Schiaparelli

Elsa Schiaparelli was a fashion designer who created women’s clothing in the late 1920's and the 1930’s. She was born in Italy, but had a storefront in Paris. The works of artists from the Dada, and Surrealist movements heavily influenced her work. Coco Chanel, her rival, famously called her “that Italian artist who makes clothes”.  Her clothing was whimsical as well as innovative.  She was the first to use a zipper on clothing, molded Lucite buttons, and “Shocking Pink”. (A color synonymous with female youth these days.) She had a bow knitted in a sweater for a trompe de l'oeil effect. She did go on to collaborate with Salvador Dali to create a shoe hat, and a lobster dress.  Jean Cocteau worked with her to create wonderfully timeless embroidery designs.  She also worked with Man Ray, Meret Oppenheim, Alberto Giacometti,  and Pablo Picasso. Her clients included Marlene Dietrich, Wallis Simpson, and Mae West among many others. Just after the Germans invaded Paris in 1940, she closed her doors, and moved to New York City. She was both Jewish, and part of the circle of artists in Paris. These were not very fitting qualities with the Nazi regime. After the war she returned to Paris but her label never regained it's previous status. In 1954 she finally gave it all up and stopped designing. Gone but not forgotten. Unlike many of the design houses of her time, her line has not yet been revived. The Metropolitan Museum Of Art in New York exhibited her designs along with Miuccia Prada, in an exhibition called Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations. So that revitalization may not be long in coming. Do you think it should be revived? Because she was so heavily influenced by the artists of her day is it even possible to recreate her label?

Wasteland

Came across a documentary on contemporary artist Vik Muniz during his two year stay in Rio de Janeiro, helping the trash pickers in the world's largest landfill.

Muniz has a unique style in which he will photograph images he makes out of very non-conventional materials, such as sugar, motor oil, bottles, and other various objects. The film Wasteland follows Vik Muniz to the world's largest landfill located in Rio de Janeiro as he photographs portraits of the pickers made out of the same recycled materials that the pickers pick out of the garbage in the landfill. He then sells the portraits at auction in London to raise funds for the pickers to help them with their working conditions as a way to give back to his childhood community.

The film is on netflix and is definitely worth the watch as it touches on so many issues and and the lives of many people.

Jean Michel Basquiat Documentary

Hello all!

Upon researching Jean-Michel Basquiat for the paper we had to do, I found a brilliant documentary on his life.  Nothing gave me more insight for my research paper than the information I found in this movie.  The documentary includes all of the people Basquiat surrounded himself with telling us stories of his time on Earth before his death from a drug overdose.  There are also several clips of Basquiat himself in interviews and creating his art.

The documentary shows just what an intriguing individual he was and farther explains what makes him a unique and intelligent artist.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!  (I feel that the documentary is far more interesting than the movie "Basquiat")
